CSL, Friendship, Joseph Epstein
February 21st, 2007 | Skip to comments
Joseph Epstein’s wry book, Friendship: An Expose, cites Lewis’s The Four Loves several times, and carries onward a friendly debate about whether men and women can, indeed, enjoy a friendship with no sexual intentions or tensions in the modern world (CSL says, no). The whole book, like most of Epstein’s essays, is worth your time, if you know him from his days as editor of The American Scholar. Frankly, There is a gentle curmugeonliness about his vision that invites comparisons to the best essayists in English from the 20th Century. His comely reflections on turning 70 will also repay your visit.
